This is what Day One of the Battle of Shiloh looked like.
The reason the Battle of Shiloh occurred was because the Union was defending the Pittsburg Landing so that the Confederates could not use the Tennessee River to ship supplies. On the first day of the Battle of Shiloh, no Union soldier was expecting the South to attack. That all changed when Gen Sherman's men came under attack by a large Confederate force and were forced to fight a tactical retreat.
On Day Two, after Grant sent Sherman to chase down the cowardly and retreating Confederates, the battlefield changed significantly.
The next day the Union managed to re-join and then Grant sent Sherman and his troops to chase the enemy down and conduct a counter attack sending the enemy further to the south, and keeping control of the Pittsburg Landing.
The battle was a much needed Union victory since the war was becoming unpopular. It was also's Sherman's first victory as a General.
